Ten Lines Of Code…

Fred Wilson talks about the recent bit.ly funding

But just because something is simple to build doesn’t mean it won’t be a good venture capital investment. I’ve heard many people say they could build twitter in a weekend. I don’t doubt it. But twitter is more than code, it’s a popular communications service and an API that thousands of developers have built upon……………..

What is critically important is an active user base that is engaged and getting a lot of value out of the service. And on that count, bit.ly is doing very well.

Thats how I also look at building iimjobs.com, which is built using open source software - Joomla, from technology standpoint.

The value is in how we use existing technology to solve a real consumer problem for a segment thats not being addressed by the bigger players

Ahmedabad Mirror talks about fresh MBA graduates from premier business schools uploading resumes on iimjobs.com

“The rise in the number of applicants on our website shows that the students are clearly looking for better job opportunities,” says Tarun Matta, founder of iimjobs.com

It also dicusses the plight of students pursuing MBA from foreign business schools, struggling to land a good job under current economic meltdown

“They are the ones facing the heat of the global meltdown, the most. The economy is in shambles in developed countries. Many of the students have taken huge loans and are really worried about getting a job. As many as 200 such students have also applied on our portal,” says Matta.

Press Coverage - II

Economic Times talks about Fresh MBA graduates posting their resumes on iimjobs.com

The number of IIM students tapping job sites such as TimesJobs, Naukri and IIMjobs have doubled in the last few weeks, according to the webmasters that ET spoke to. Some are even signing up for the supplementary services that they offer to build better resumes, a first for IIM graduates, say portal managers.

“It’s a counter intuitive step. This shows a dent in confidence levels. Unlike other years when recruiters were fighting for top slots, this year students are under pressure to get decent jobs,” says Tarun Matta, founder of iimjobs.com, an online job site.

Mint quoted me in an article about ongoing placements at IIM Ahmedabad

Tarun Matta, an IIM graduate who runs iimjobs.com, a jobs portal, said in an email that while IIMs would manage to find jobs for all graduates, “fresh graduates from tier-II and tier-III would be the ones that’ll get affected the most”.

Communities

Fred Wilson writes a story about Mark Zuckerberg while he was still a student at Harvard. It goes like this:

At Davos, Mark told the story of an art class he took at Harvard. He was busy starting Facebook and didn’t have time to attend the class or study. The final exam was a week away and he was worried about flunking. So he went to the Internet and downloaded images of all the art that he knew would be on the exam (not sure how he knew that - Jeff leaves that part out). He puts them all up on a web page and adds blank boxes under each of them. Then he emails the web page to all of his classmates and tells them he just put up a study guide. The class responds by marking up the page, editing each other, and getting it perfect. Zuckerberg aces the exam, of course, but also the professor told him that the entire class had done much better than usual on the exam.

Brings out the power of communities collaborating on the web. The challenge, of course, always is to bring critical mass of users on the platform so that community is self sustaining.

The best way to do it is to focus on offline communities & groups (and not individuals), bring them online and have loads of patience.

Adsense doesn’t scale

Here’s plot of my pageviews and adsense earnings for last couple of years.

Interestingly, there doesn’t seem to be any correlation between pageviews and earnings! What does that mean?

Web hosting

Got this mail from my hosting provider -

Actually we have checked and found that at a time 200-300 mysql queries are running through your site so thats why you are getting this issue so i suggest you please take VPS server from us because some time your site taking more CPU and memory usage of the server so please check and update us if you require further assistance

Guess its time to move to a VPS. Its good that the site is growing, but migrating to a new host is going to be huge hassle.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
